The total number of questions presented in Select missing word is two-three (2~3).

Scoring(Skills Tested):

The main purpose of the Select missing word test section is an assessment of the Listening/Reading skill of the student. Reading Skill is only used for reading the instruction and selecting the response.

Your answer for Select Missing Word is judged on your ability to predict what a speaker will say based on contextual clues in a recording. 

Your answer is marked as either correct or incorrect. If you can guess the right word/ right phrase of the word, you will get one point. If you don’t answer the right answer you don’t get any points since no negative marking is done. 

Only the score of Listening is connected to the question type.

Time to answer:  

You are presented with a 20-70 secs of audio recording then you need to select the correct option as soon possible. 

The audio will play after 7 seconds. There is no time limit on a per question basis. You need to be aware of the overall time limit of the Listening section.

If you can complete the answer in less time, you can transfer the time to another task.

Structure of the task

  • For this item type, you hear a short recording. Listen to the audio clip carefully, audio (20-70 seconds) is played only once, no-repeat playback available.
  • The last word or group of words in the recording are usually  replaced with a beep. 
  • Pick the most appropriate one, to complete the recording  from the set of options presented.
  • The task is scored as either correct or incorrect. No score is allocated for an incorrect.
  • First, listen to the audio and make a quick note of the key idea from the lecture. Put in your 100% concentration on the audio, especially the final section. The audio is played only once, no-repeat play is available.
  • It is not recommended to memorize the whole passage, make notes of key points from the audio especially the later section and then match with the available options.
  • To select an option click on the radio button using the left key on your mouse. You can click on another option to deselect the first option and select the second one.
  • You have no time limit on individual questions, there is a time limit on the overall Section which is around 20 to 40 mins. It is recommended to use around 2-6 minutes to finish this task.
  • Then, Click on the Next button on the bottom right corner of the screen.

Select Missing Word is one of the most interesting questions in the PTE Listening segment. The last few words are particularly important. It’s very important to look at the progress bar when it comes to the end. You will hear the last word or just a few words have been beeped out. To get good marks in this question, you not only have to understand what is said but also to understand the overall context and then decide which choices match in that context. To do so you need to understand the text you are lacking. 

In this type of question, you can also test your comprehension of the English vocabulary, the use of phrases or grammar.

Things to remember

  • The recording will play automatically within 7 secs. You can only listen to the audio once.
  • You will find multiple options but only one of them is correct.
  • To select an option, left-click the option. The selected option will be highlighted in yellow. If you happen to change your mind you can deselect the option by left-clicking on it again.

To answer the question, Start choosing each option and add the last few words you captured. Is that meaningful? Is the unfinished sentence complete? You should ask yourself these are the questions. This is your correct choice if a certain option answers all these questions positively.

You must offer adequate listening practice to your ears before the exam if you do not work or study in an English-speaking setting.

Make sure to check all the options, before you submit your response. Set the last few words of the audio one by one every option and see whether it makes sense. It should be correct and right grammatically and align with the passage key message.
