The main task of this segment is to first listen to the recording and then highlight the correct summary of the recording/lecture.

Number of questions: 

The total number of questions presented in Highlight Correct Summary is two-three (2~3) that are 30-90 seconds each.

Scoring(Skills Tested):

The main purpose of the Highlight Correct Summary test section is an assessment of the Listening and Reading skills of the student. 

The test is based on Students ability to comprehend, analyze and combine information from a recording the ability to perceive, analyze and combine information from a recording and identify the most accurate summary of the recording.

Your response will be evaluated based on the selected option by the user. There are only two kinds of responses to this question: correct and incorrect. If the answer is incorrect you will not get any points. Negative marking is applicable for incorrect answers. Make sure you are confident in your choices. The minimum number you can score is no less than 0.

The score of Listening, Reading is connected to the question type.

The score of Writing and speaking is not affected by this section.

Time to answer:  

You have no time limit on the individual question, whereas the whole listening section has a defined time limit. 

You have 7-10 seconds before the recording is played.

It may not be possible to go through the transcription word to word but you can quickly skim through the transcription for better understanding about the topic to highlight the incorrect Words.

If you can complete the answer in less time, you can transfer the time to another task.

Structure of the task

  • For this item type, you hear a short recording(30-90 seconds). Listen to the audio clip carefully, audio is played only once, no-repeat playback available.
  • Then you need to select the summary that best matches the audio recording. Several choices are available, but only one option is right.
  • You have 7-10 secs before the audio starts. Use this time to look at the summary transcript instantly. This simple step will put your mind in a better position to listen to the audio and appreciate it.
  • To select an option to click on the radio button using the left button on your mouse. You can click on another option to deselect the first option and select the second one.
  • You have no time limit on individual questions, there is a time limit on the overall Listening Section which is around 20 to 40 mins. It is recommended to use around 2-6 minutes to finish this task.
  • Then, Click on the Next button on the bottom right corner of the screen.

How to answer Highlight Correct Summary?

The task is scored based on the student’s ability to comprehend, analyze and combine information from a recording and identify the most accurate summary of the recording.

It is recommended to listen to the audio recording, make notes and then select the correct summary.

You need to select the answer based on the facts and ideas presented in the audio, do not add any opinion or decide based on facts presented outside of the audio recording.

You can score full marks in this task so carefully select the answer, better performance on this task can help to improve the overall score in PTE Academic.

You will not be able to read the entire summaries, but you can probably grab a couple of words from each option. You can also take a look at all of the choices.

The audio plays automatically. You can only hear the audio once.

There are different possible responses for the audio recording but only one of them is correct.

To select an option just left-click on it. The option that you select is highlighted in yellow. If you change your mind, left-click on it again.

It might be difficult for you to write and listen at the same time. So, it is advised you listen to the audio first, make notes of the important points and then read the summaries later.

First, listen to the lecture and make a quick note of the key points from the audio. Put in your 100% concentration on the audio, the audio is played only once, no-repeat play is available.

Review the note and select the best possible summary of the audio. 

It is not recommended to memorize the whole passage, make notes of key points from the passage and tally the notes to determine the best answer.

It’s two advantages–it gives you a better understanding of what you’re going to hear and it helps you find choices when listening.

After you select the correct option don’t submit the answers immediately. Review the option against all the options and verify that your selected option is the best possible match.

Last but not the least, use the time wisely. It’s better to complete earlier and then review for accuracy than to hold on to the single hurdle and lose other potential correct answers.
